He's baaack!
Sorry for the hiatus but I've been away in the land of dork for the past month playing World of Warcraft instead of going to shows. Pitiful? Yes. Last night at the Mercury Lounge with the Detroit Cobras was just too good to pass up.

The Detroit Cobras - August 10th, 2005 - The Mercury Lounge
I try and go to all shows by Bloodshot artists in the area since I'm rarely disappointed. The main reason why I went to see the Detroit Cobras was out of sheer curiosity. They don't seem like the type of band that Bloodshot would sign. From what I heard, the Cobras are often described as a cover band which does them no justice. They're a rock band to the core.
I was a little bit skeptical before they got on stage as there was a multitude of hipster international kids in the audience. However it appeared that foreign hipsters have as much sense as NYC hipsters. (NB: They appeared to have made a splash in the UK a while ago.) It was an early show and the Merc rarely sets up early shows unless the band's relatively good.
At around eight, the band came onstage. "Bring on the hookers!" clamored the band's lead singer/ex-stripper Rachel Nagy. The audience's response: "They're already onstage!" Nagy smiled and simply said, "You don't know how close you are." That's when I fell in love.
The band has just been signed to Bloodshot Records and it was their first show as part of the Bloodshot family. It wasn't a very impressive start due to the constant feedback from lead guitar Mary Ramirez's amp but it subsided. Soulful and energetic, Rachel Nagy's voice drew the crowd in with every verse while she occasionally took drag a from her cigarette.
I'd describe their sound as the band the Raveonettes should be: garage punk rock from the heart of Motor City with the attitude to boot. Have a listen. The band, being part of the early show, had a short set but the audience wanted more and managed to get two additional songs.
I will definitely be attending one of their October shows (10/12 - Mercury Lounge, 10/13 Southpaw, 10/15/05 Maxwell's) in the area but for now, I'll have to grab one of their cds. Pics (craptacular because of the Merc's sparse lighting but eh) are on flickr.
