And oh! How we to and fro!

A Silver Mt. Zion - August 13th, 2005 - Southpaw

Being surrounded by moping hipsters is not my idea of an enjoyable Saturday night. A Silver Mt. Zion, an offshot of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, played their first American venue to a full house.

The music is experimental/chamber rock with focus on found-sound. I wasn't too impressed by the two short openers and I had already made plans for my escape after the first song. I just couldn't take the broody and garbled sounds anymore. When Efrim Menuck, the band's lead vocals, informed the crowd that first song they were going to play was God Bless Our Dead Marines I was counting the seconds to my departure.

I postponed it for another two hours, after hearing the song's first verse. Haunting and intense, Efrim's voice echoed throughout the club accompanied by guitar, drums, bass, and dual violins. A brood of hipsters were sniffling and crying in the dark.

By the end of the night the audience was left emotionally drained and yet they wanted more. A Silver Mt. Zion is definitely not a band that I regularly listened to but I felt myself fortunate seeing them live at least once.
