Canadian Invasion Revisited

It's Tuesday and I'm a slacker. Here's the review with pics:

Dallas Good of the Sadies - June 25th, 2005 - Prospect Park

The opener of Saturday's Celebrate Brooklyn Festival was another one of Neko's backup bands, the Sadies. The band's founders, brothers Dallas and Travis good, are always a blast to watch: Dallas mumbling quietly into the mic as he tinkers with the guitar while Travis maniacally plays his fiddle.

Matt Verta-Ray & Jon Spencer - June 25th, 2005 - Prospect Park

I purchased their cd a couple of months ago and it was so-so. I'd rather see them live and they definitely put on a good show with guests Matt Verta-Ray and Jon Spencer (aka MVR + JS = Heavy Trash).

The newest indie rock sensation the Stars quietly came on the stage. Amy Vilan, vocals and guitar, reminded me of Morningwood's Chantal Claret but just a little more subdued.

The Stars - June 25th, 2005 - Prospect Park

Torquil Campbell, lead vocals, guitar, and trumpeteer, was definitely lively as you can see from the pictures. I'd definitely get their cd as there were some good songs in their setlist I wouldn't mind listening to.

Finally, the New Pornographers came on a nice cool summer night surrounded by the thunderous applause of about 7,000-8,000 people.

Kathryn Calder - June 25th, 2005 - Prospect Park

Kathryn sounded much better on Saturday night but I still yearn for Neko. Kurt played Jackie yet again and was a little too hyper for Twin Cinema but overall, a good show. There wasn't much difference with Maxwell's and Brooklyn's setlists except Brooklyn's show was shorter which I still attribute to the hipsters. Oh, I was the only one singing during Sing Me Spanish Techno. Yep, dorktacular.

The Stars album is really fantastic. Worth picking up for sure.

This isn't really about Celebrate Brooklyn, although the pics are cool. I just found your site. Are the "history" "contact" words at the top of the homepage supposed to be links? I just wanted to say "nice site" to you.

Those are still being slowly implemented. Thanks!
