this whiskey priest he burned the church to keep his girls alive

I sneaked a peek at the New Pornographers' new album via the only good torrent tracker alive ISOhunt . Here's my review track by track:

1. Twin Cinema - The only official pre-release MP3 of the album which has caused everyone to impatiently try and find the rest of the album.

2. The Bones of an Idol - Neko singing about an archaeologist sifting through a dig site who's been searching for the bones of an idol for years. Reference to her parents who are archaeologists? A little too mellow and somewhat depressing for an NP album.

3. Use It - Stereogum released this MP3 this week. I don't know why, it's not the best song in the album.

4. The Bleeding Heart Show - Another pretty mellow song. I usually skip these.

5. Jackie, Dressed in Cobras - Finally another upbeat song! It's about a "girl on a train devouring her life/there's a kid going insane over her man/left on the jungle floor/Jackie, dressed in cobras." Neko definitely wrote this one. She's the only one who writes about animals, although surprisingly this one isn't about mammals (if you don't count poor Jackie).

6. The Jessica Numbers - It took me awhile to figure out that this song is. At first I thought it was some guy trying to get a girl's number at a bar but I think it's more of a jab at those nine-to-fivers and their mudane "missions" of getting the stats on some specific company (i.e. the Jessica Numbers) for their bosses. Clever.

7. These are the Fables - Another Neko song. Lyric I like: Ten thousand dancing girls/kicking cans across the sky/no reason why. Favorite mellow song of the album.

8. Sing Me Spanish Techno - The song that has been stuck in my head for the past two days. This is the type of song the New Pornographers will be remembered for: upbeat poppy music that you can wake up to.

9. Falling Through Your Clothes - Another catchy song.

10. Broken Beads - I don't know why AC Newman didn't play this at Maxwell's. It's a song that's just begging to be sung along with the crowd.

11. Three or Four - I don't think it's Neko singing backup on this but rather, Kurt which makes me laugh.

12. Star Bodies - Poppy AC/Neko duet.

13. Streets of Fire - Sweet sweet sweet sweet fire in the street/let's sully every stage/lick my lips/twist my hips/but contessa, i already do. I love this song. They should have ended with this track.

14. Stacked Crooked - Second longest song of the album. Eh.

Overall, the New Pornographers produced a wonderful album that will surely be treasured by every indie pop fanatic.

- GOPster approved.

As far as I know, all of the songs were written by AC Newman except for the three written and sung by Dan Bejar (ie, "Jackie Dressed In Cobras")

It's true -- this is A.C. Newman's band. Neko has never written a song for the New Pornographers, and Dan Bejar usually contributes 3 or 4 an album, including both "Jackies."
