Where have all sensations gone? (Part two)

On to the actual review. I was intending on being vicious towards Kathryn Calder, but I'm not going to.

Kathryn Calder - June 22nd, 2005 - Maxwell's, Hoboken

No one can replace Neko and if you've been to one of her live shows you expect alot. What can you do? Kathryn is pretty young and she still has a long way ahead of her. No doubt this would be an opportunity of a lifetime for her; visiting great states such as New Jersey. We'll see Ms. Calder again in a couple of months when her own band, Immaculate Machine, opens for the New Pornographers on October 12th and 13th. Note to the New Pornographers, screw Webster Hall and go back to the Bowery. Please?

They opened up with It's Only Divine Right and I automatically started singing along which was pretty embarassing. Taking a peak at their setlist they played a song entitled Graceland. It was eh. I wasn't too disappointed with the rest of the setlist. My favorite track from the new album that they played was no doubt Sing Me Spanish Techno.

After three albums they still manage to create wonderfully vibrant and catchy songs such as this.

AC Newman with an odd instrument

Towards the middle of the set, AC whipped out a mini keyboard with a tube protruding out of it which he placed in his mouth while Kathryn sang another new song entitled The Bones of an Idol. It was pretty weird. This has Neko written all of it. Maybe it's an homage to her parents who were archaeologists? Here's a vid.

They played all my favorite songs (From Blown Speakers, Mass Romantic, Electric Version, Slow Decent, Letter from an Occupant) so I was content. I only wish Neko was there (if you haven't noticed by now). I'll check them out again on Saturday.
