Jesus the Mexican boy, born in a truck on the 4th of July
It seems like every Friday night, I'll end up at Webster Hall. Iron & Wine played their second show in New York and I wasn't feeling it. It might be because Sam Beam looks like my old geology professor:

Freaky. I was half-expecting Bean to launch into a lecture on the schistosity of mica but instead it felt like I was stuck in Republican hell: gay couple in front, hemp-smelling (and PDA obsesed) couple to the right, and behind me were two lesbians who could have easily kicked my ass. It was hippie central.
I can usually overlook all these things if the band I was seeing was actually good. It was probably the opening band, Band of Horses, that turned me off. First off, the guitarist couldn't tune a guitar. It didn't help that the lead singer wasn't a singer. The crowd definitely was too polite to boo them off stage. Thankfully, they only played for 45 minutes.
Sam Bean and his troupe came on shortly and an eery silence enveloped Webster Hall. The last time I've heard silence like that was when Neko Case played the Bowery in February so I was definitely expecting something great. In the end, they just couldn't cut it. Webster Hall doesn't do his type of music justice. Regardless of the quiet hall, the sound still was subpar. From now on I'll listen to Iron & Wine in my iPod and not in some sketchy club.
